Body Mass Index (BMI): Are You at a Healthy Weight?

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

By Dana E. Smith The body mass index, or BMI, helps clarify an important distinction between being overweight or being obese. If you weigh too much, you’re obviously overweight. But if you have a very high proportion of body fat, you’re obese. Based on your body mass index, your doctor or other health professional will classify your weight as healthy, overweight, or obese. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the BMI “describes body weight relative to height and is correlated with total body fat content in most adults”. In almost all cases, this means that the BMI will accurately reflect your weight and proportion of body fat as a function of your height and weight when categorizing you as healthy, overweight or obese. Calculating your approximate body mass index is relatively straightforward, although you’ll probably need a calculator just to save time. To get your BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703. Next, divide that result by your height in inches. Then divide that result by your height in inches one more time. As an example, let’s say you weigh 180 pounds and are 5 feet 10 inches tall. Multiply 180 by 703 to get 126,540. Next, divide this by 70 (70 inches is the same as 5′ 10″) to get 1807.7. Now, divide 1807.7 by 70 one more time. The result — 25.8– is your approximate BMI or body mass index. If you don’t have a calculator handy, you can get the same result using the free interactive BMI calculator at www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmicalc.htm. If the above example sounds like you, you might be surprised to learn that you’re ever so slightly heavier than your doctor might like. A BMI from 18.5 up to 25 is considered healthy, from 25 up to 30 is classified as overweight, and 30 or higher is obese. Generally, says the NHLBI, the higher a person’s BMI, the greater the risk for health problems. In addition to causing your BMI to skyrocket, excess body fat is a well recognized health risk. Men and women with waist lines in excess of 40 and 35 inches, respectively, are much more at risk for health problems like Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Like every rule of thumb, this one also has it exception. Body builders, for example, often have a body mass index above 25 and sometimes even above 30. In this case, however, the higher BMI reflects the fact that body builders have more muscle mass without having more fat. Finally, there’s still only one sure way to lower your BMI if you’re overweight or obese: Eat less and exercise more. Your body will burn more calories than you eat and your body mass index will go down over time. Grow Better Roses By Carefully Preparing Your Rose Garden

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By Tim Gorman Rose gardens are lovely additions to any home and people are sometimes surprised to know how little time it takes to maintain a rose garden once the roses are thriving. Choosing your rose plants and preparing your garden can be a very time consuming and labor intensive part, but the enjoyment that you get from your rose garden once your roses are blooming will make it well worth your effort! It is an absolute necessity to determine exactly how much space you have and how you hope to utilize that space. One of the most important things you need to know about roses is that they require quite a bit of space. Jamming them in will limit growth and beauty, if not kill them altogether. Different rose varieties have different space requirements, so find out as much as you can about the plants that interest you to make sure you have the proper room for them. Once you have chosen a good spot and your rose plants, you will need to assess the condition of your soil. You will need to make sure the ground is prepared for planting by loosening the earth with a garden claw or auger. If you have a lot of clay, it is especially important to loosen the clay, remove some, and then supplement with potting soil, which is much less sticky. Make sure your holes are deep enough to completely and deeply bury the roots as roses are very susceptible to cold weather. Your rose garden will be healthier if your dirt is prepared properly. After planting, feed your roses. The rose food should be watered down into the ground to reach roots. Mulch around the plants just before winter so that the roots are protected from freezing. Once you have planted thoughtfully and carefully, your rose garden should bring you years of enjoyment with minimal upkeep. Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #14

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

By Tami Close You know what is so amazing? We get to keep learning how to improve ourselves. Each day brings a new opportunity for us to practice unconditional love, especially of ourselves. Loving your body is demonstrating unconditional love. Think what your body does for you each day. Right now, say: I love my body, I love my body, I love my body, I love my body! Feels great, doesnt it? Our bodies are incredible gifts from God. If were experiencing resistance to change, then were resisting Gods loving message. What are you resisting? I was on a teleseminar recently and the topic was visualization. The message was very powerful. Let me share with you what I learned. Take out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Write down 5 things that you desire in your life. It can be a carmine is a red BMW convertible and I have a picture of it on my dream board and look at it everyday while I say affirmations in my energy circle. Of course, in my visualization the real George Clooney is in the passenger seat, not my cardboard cutout of George that a friend gave me. Maybe you want a new house, a trip to Hawaii, thousands of dollars, a new outfit as you achieve your ideal weight. Whatever it is, write down 5 things. Say the statements out loud, shout them and do the visualization hiney dance to them. I do love shaking it. I read a cute quote the other day.what if the hokey pokey is what its all about? Interesting thought, huh? You know what? I took a break from writing, went for a walk and just came back. While I was on my walk, guess what I saw? A red BMW convertible!! Now, is that synchronicity or what? You know what I should have done? Jumped out in front of that car and made the driver get out and give me her car. Oooopppswrong vibration. The focus is higher vibration and manifesting it through Divine means. See the difference in vibration levels. I will manifest that car. I dont know how it will come; I just know it will. I only know why I desire it. I like the feeling that it conjures up.the feeling of freedom, sex appeal, youthfulness, being a hottie! Weve all experienced times throughout the day where we have a lull.where our energy is low or flat. What we want to do is to keep that vibration high so we constantly are aligned with the energy that were pulling to us. When we are in a low or flat vibration, those things we desire cant be propelled to us because our thoughts are creating a disconnection. When our thoughts are creating and saying, Yes, I am attracting a red BMW convertible then we keep the energy lines open and that car will reveal itself. Its like that phone commercial, Can you hear me now? When were in low vibration, that which we want to attract cannot hear us. Guess what shows up? Everything we dont want. Now, when were in high vibration, the reception is great and we get heard loud and clear. All that we desire flows easily to us. Lets practice. Well name these the High 5. Get it? 5 things that will manifest at a High vibration. I just made that up and I believe its extremely clever. Read those statements and dance, dance, dance!! Now, youre going to be carrying that list with you throughout the day and take it out and do the routine of saying the statements out loud with enthusiasm. Do this several times throughout the day and notice how your energy will remain at a high vibration. I encourage you to get carried away and shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake your booty while saying them. Now say them over and over and really put some feeling into it. I know you can do it! Ive had a practice of doing this type of visualization in the morning and at night while reading those things that I am manifesting in my life. I had noticed that I was experiencing some lulls in my energy during the day, and was grateful to hear this Divine message on how to sustain the high energy throughout the day. Ive been doing this a few days since I heard this on the teleseminar and Ive seen remarkable results. We were told to make a commitment to ourselves and make it a goal for 30 days. I encourage you to do the same. For 30 days take time to shout the High 5s throughout the day. I look forward to hearing about your results. God is AWESOME! I am shouting that statement from my office window right now. I just opened the window and shouted it so everyone could hear. Oh, the birds just flew away. Theyll be back.I have a bird feeder. Were on fire!! Nothing can stop us!! High 5! Lessons From a Six Year Old

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

By Michael Katz My 6 year old daughter Emily knows exactly what she wants to be when she grows up. Two weeks ago she knew that she wanted to be a teacher. Last week she knew that she wanted to be an Olympic swimmer. This week she knows that she wants to be a professional singer. Emily’s not indecisive. In fact, she’s a natural born marketer. Here’s why: Emily Has A Laser Focus. Regardless of which career is the career of the week, Emily is behind it 100%. She’s all teacher, then all swimmer, then all singer. She doesn’t muddy the waters by trying to embrace too many things at once, and as a result, the listener both understands what she wants, and remembers it. Many businesses - small ones in particular - take an opposite approach. Working from the belief that, “the more services we offer, the more business opportunities there will be,” these companies attempt to cast as wide a net as possible: “We’re executive coaches. We do everything from presentation training to life skills workshops to one-on- one CEO mentoring.” “We’re painters. We specialize in residential and commercial buildings and projects of all types. No job too big or too small.” “We’re executive recruiters. Sales, Marketing, HR, IT, and Finance are just a few of the areas we focus on.” The unfortunate result of this scattered approach however, is that potential clients and others associate these businesses with nothing in particular. The single most effective thing I ever did to grow my business (other than naming it after a flightless aquatic bird) was to stop offering “web marketing services” in general, and to instead focus 100% of my efforts on the very narrow niche of electronic newsletters. Not only does this allow me to become more expert on this topic than my competitors who only dabble in it, it also gives me a clear hook to hang my hat on. Clients, prospects, colleagues, friends - even my mailman - think of me as, “the E-Newsletter guy.” As a result, they are more likely to come to me when they need this particular service; more likely to trust from the beginning that I know what I’m talking about; and more likely to recommend my services to their colleagues (can you say, “viral marketing?”). Rather than reducing your opportunities, narrowing your focus has the effect of attracting business to you. Michael J. Katz is Founder and Chief Penguin of Blue Penguin Development, Inc., (http://www.BluePenguinDevelopment.com) a Boston consulting firm that helps clients increase sales by showing them how to nurture their existing relationships, and that specializes in the development of electronic newsletters.
